World War II Tunnels

The World War II Tunnels were built by the Royal Engineers in preparation of war during the 1940’s when Britain was at war with Germany and Italy, as the future looked bleak for Gibraltar as the enemy surrounded it and an attack was highly probable.

St Michael’s Cave

St. Michael’s Cave is the name given to a network of limestone caves located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar, at a height of over 300m (980 ft) above sea level.

Skywalk Glass Bridge

Standing 340m directly above sea level, the Skywalk is located higher than the tallest point of London’s The Shard.

Pillars of Hercules

Gibraltar is mentioned as the European Pillar of Hercules and Jebel Musa, the North African Pillar of Hercules.

O’Hara’s Battery

O’Hara’s Battery is an artillery battery located at the highest point of Gibraltar, near the southern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

Moorish Castle

The fortifications on and around the site of the Moorish Castle were first built in 1160 AD or earlier, but these were destroyed when the Spanish re-conquered Gibraltar from 1309-1333.

Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege Tunnels, also known as the Upper Galleries, are a series of tunnels inside the northern end of Gibraltar. They were dug out from the solid limestone by the British during the Great Siege of Gibraltar from 1779 – 1783.

The 100 Ton Gu

The 100 Ton Gun was installed in the early 19th century but never fired in anger.

City Under Siege Exhibition
